Ray Dream Designer Gallery - Photorealism III

The following are examples of Ray Dream Designer/Studio being used to create photorealistic scene both real and imagined.

In Search of the Moon

In Search of the Moon
(114K J PG)

"I have had no formal training in art or graphics. Like many, I just enjoy working with the various graphic applications. I started with Photoshop about three years ago and graduated to 3D more recently."

"My primary focus is comic (far side) bovine art. My web page features a whole layout of Wisconsin Dairy Air. Dairy Air is a Division of Bovine Aeronautics and was founded by Professor Bovinestein. Really! Most of the graphics on my web site were created with photoshop. More recently, I have begun to add my RDS creations."

"The graphic I sent is entitled: In search of the Moon.. It is one in a series of DASA (Dairy Air Space Agency) graphics that I am working on."

"This is my first attempt at such a project with RDS. All but the cow were modeled in RDS. I created all the shaders specifically for this project. The cow is actually a 2D scanned image. This is not too hard to pick up when examining the image. I am in the process of modeling a 3D cow for future scenes."

"The DASA page is: http://www.lse.fullfeed.com/~dairyair/DASA.htm I want to eventually work up 3D renderings of many of the projects I did in photoshop. I have other ideas for Dairy Air in the future."

Ant Acid Profile (264K JPG)

"Like so many other illustrators, I used to use the airbrush quite abit. I got my first Macintosh in 1987 and have been building knowledge and experience ever since. Over the past five years or so, the hardware capabilities and software packages have gotten to a point where I have (reluctantly) put my airbrush away and been able to (in many cases) achieve better results in less time on the computer. The computer's usability and versatility allow ideas to go from my head to print in ways never before possible. On top of the practicality, it's just plain fun. The Macintosh has breathed new life into my life-long interest in art. Having fun in what you do for a living is dramatically under-rated. I believe everyone should like their chosen profession."

"Ant Acid" was created for the 1996 International Modern Masters of 3D "Characters of Your Imagination" contest, and won first place in that category. She represents well over 200 hours of modeling time, with additional rendering time (48 hours+) and additional time photographing heavy machinery. Every piece was modeled in Ray Dream's freeform modeler.

"To see the actual winning image, please go to http://www.sandstudios.com/antacid.html following the links to Ant Acid's own page. She doesn't get along well with others so she had to be secluded. Enjoy it.
Any comments are welcome, and of course, we want your business. Please contact me at: jbcrane@sandstudios.com. "

Flights of Fancy (116K JPG)

"By day, I practice Architecture, but in the evenings and on weekends my hobby is 3D modelling. I began working in this area to illustrate my designs, but "flights of fancy" like this one are a lot more enjoyable.."

F18 Hornets (71K JPG)

"The landscape was rendered in KPT Bryce and saved as a PICT file. The F-18s where built, positioned and rendered in Ray Dream using the Bryce PICT file as the background. Matching the lighting on the F-18 Ray Dream models with the lighting of the landscape was the most difficult part of the imaging."

Post Bioform Fantasy (106K JPG)

" I built the bike and the robot in separate documents before uniting them. The robot is all linked in preparation for animating, if I ever get the time to learn Ray Dream Animator..."

"I have been a painter/sculptor in traditional media for about 20 years and have been making the career transition into computer imaging for the last year and a half. Most of my recent career has been sculpting for motion pictures and themed environments. Credits include: True Lies, Stargate, Coneheads, Wayne's World 1&2, Mario Bros, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Rocketeer , Chainsaw Massacre #2, etc., etc. This summer I completed a two year project for Universal Studios- the dinosaurs for the Jurassic Park Ride attraction in Hollywood."

"While all this has been great, I have really fallen for 3D modeling and hope to soon refocus my entire career in this venue. My immediate plans are to get on an SCI workstation and learn Alias/Wavefront. Raydream is my first experience with 3D and I really enjoy it, although there are some quirks with the cameras and shaders that drive me nuts."

Mr. Jameson is a 15 year old honors student at Rogers High School in Newport, RI.

"...While I am more interested in 3-D computer art, I am a pretty good writer, and have been published. For a time I was really into chess and won the 1994 Rhode Island State Scholastic Chess Singles Tournament for my age group. I am interested in science fiction of all types, games of strategy (chess and Risk especially), and, of course, 3-D computer graphics. I began using RayDream in the summer of '95, and while I'm not as good as most of the other artists displayed at this web site, I'm still pretty proud of my work. So far, 3-D graphics are just a hobby, and a probable college major, but I could easily make it a part-time job if anyone wanted to pay me (hint, hint). I'm probably dirt cheap compared to the professionals. I recently got Ray Dream Studio, and have done a few animations, but none that I thought were worthy of uploading."

Rule's Favorite (27K JPG)

"... built all models in Raydream [Designer], scanned ornamental wallpaper clip art & modified them in PhotoShop. Texture mapped wallpaper and some with Bump mapping such as the door threshold with the angels. As you can see the models themselves are very simple, it is the texture maps that make it look complicated..."

The Carnivorous Garden (30K JPG)

This image is called "The Carnivorous Garden," in which every plant has some means of capturing it's prey, the flies buzzing around overhead. Yes, these are all real, and I created all of them with Ray Dream Designer's freeform modeling tool. The real tough part in this project really was in the lighting and the shaders. When you get down to the basics, modeling is the easy part. I positioned 2 lights on opposing sides of the plant scene, and made the one which was supposed to be the true light source whitish/yellowish, while the other was blackish/bluish in color. That created a night effect. The water was merely the glass shader with a higher refraction value and a bump map. All of the plants were freeform modeling/primitive compounds, that I put together to create a realistic effect. The flies were very basic, in that I just applied a motion blur to make them look as if they were in motion. The rendering (300 dpi) took a week to render on a 7100/80 Power Macintosh. I am currently working on similar projects in the new Ray Dream Studio.
